The Best Methods For Cleaning Concrete

Has your concrete patio, driveway, hardstanding or floor become stained and dirty? As a porous material, if not sealed, concrete is prone to staining as oil, water and chemicals can all soak into the surface. Luckily, there are a number of effective cleaning methods for concrete. Detailed below are our suggestions for the best methods of cleaning concrete, alongside some tips to prevent discolouration and stubborn marks in the future.

Shift Moveable Dirt

In the first instance, remove leaves, dust and other moveable grime from the concrete surface. A stiff-bristled broom works really well on small- to medium-sized patches of concrete. Larger areas of concrete may need a powered sweeper to get the job done.

Bicarb And White Vinegar

An environmentally friendly option that's safe to use around pets and children, applying a paste of bicarbonate soda, mixed either with white vinegar or water, is an effective way of cleaning lightly soiled concrete. Simply apply the solution and scrub and rinse with clear water. Depending on the size of the concrete area, a scrubbing brush, stiff-bristled brush or powered scrubber will be needed to work the solution in. Some people also find that white vinegar can be used on its own to effectively clean away water-based stains. Note that bicarb and white vinegar are unlikely to work on oil-based stains.

Bleach And Detergent

If you've got an oil-based stain, detergent is likely to be the most effective stain-removing option. Detergent contains soap, which is a proven de-greaser, dispersing fats and oils. Detergent and hot water applied with a scrubbing brush or similar will usually remove light to medium oil-based staining. Add bleach for additional stain-removing effectiveness. Note that bleach is toxic to wildlife, so exercise caution in where it's used and how it's disposed of.

Proprietory Concrete Cleaner

Often a good solution for heavier staining, a proprietory concrete cleaner should be used in line with the manufacturer's instructions. Some ready-made cleaners are designed for manual use, others for use with a pressure jet or scrubber/dryer.

Scrubber/Dryer

Larger areas of concrete or concrete that's badly stained may benefit from the use of a mechanical scrubber/dryer. This machine incorporated stiff-bristled, circular brushes that provide heavy-duty scrubbing action. Used alongside a suitable cleaning solution, they're great for removing stubborn stains and covering larger areas. As well as a scrubbing action, the machine also incorporates a handy drying option that will leave your concrete surface dry and ready for use.

High-pressure Water Jet Or Power Washer

Stubborn stains may benefit from the use of a power or pressure washer. These machines release high-pressure jets of water that can be directed at larger stains or deeply embedded dirt. A power washer can often achieve great results using just water, making it a green, safe option that's suitable for use in a range of locations.

Consider Sealing/Resealing For Added Protection

Applying a protective coating to the concrete surface once it's been cleaned minimises the risk of stubborn staining and can prolong the life of your concrete. Contact the time-served concrete professionals at McCoy Concreting for further details.
